What did we learn from GP 2.0 in 2024?
It felt SO good to get back together! We have a wonderful multi-generation community that is energized by each other’s company – certainly not a surprise – it sure was great to re-kindle it. As one attendee pointed out on their arrival “it takes so long to get anywhere because people keep stopping to talk to each other”. You know….. a quick trip to Mount Rushmore to brush your teeth turns into a half-hour event…
We did not have trouble getting the GP feeling again but there were some differences. First, the cabins only have 1 room and you are sleeping in a bunk bed. Depending upon the cottage you were in at GP, you might consider this an upgrade . The beach is certainly not as lovely as GP. There is a sandy entry, however, it is quite shallow for swimming. We are looking at arranging some longer guided swims to the buoy etc to help compensate for this. There is one tennis court. It is a Sport Court so occasionally has a mind of its own, sending the ball in an unexpected direction. And your warm-up may consist of sweeping the court first. The walking trails are not as extensive but there are gravel paths and several large activity fields that we can use – perfect for badminton, soccer or frisbee. Biking is allowed, however, it is asked that it not be done on the narrower paths to ensure all can navigate them safely. Camp Couchiching’s counsellors were absolutely lovely and ensured we had a great experience. This year we are looking at incorporating some more GP traditions and having more counsellor-led programming with participants of multiple ages.
Please note – some of the activities, such as canoeing, kayaking and paddleboarding, are offered on a drop-in basis. We hope to offer some dedicated times when staff can teach them as well. Most importantly, with drop-in sessions, it means that you are responsible for self-rescue. There won’t be a small metal boat whizzing around to pick you up. Likewise, there isn’t a lifeguard at the beach. Anybody under 18 years of age must be supervised by an adult.
In 2024, members of the Geneva Park community talked about items that could help make Camp Couchiching more amenable to a family camp experience such as more Muskoka Chairs at the beach and grab bars in the showers. Some of us indicated that we would be interested in donating funds to this cause. If you are interested, you can make a donation through Canada Helps. You will get a donation receipt (for contributions over $20) and the funds will be directed to items requested by the Friends of Geneva Park.
Charitable donation receipts can be generated right from the Canada Helps platform.
